Your window into the Elastic Stack

Overview

Kibana

Kibana is your window into the Elastic Stack. Specifically, it's a browser-based analytics and search dashboard for Elasticsearch.

Getting Started

If you just want to try Kibana out, check out the Elastic Stack Getting Started Page to give it a whirl.

If you're interested in diving a bit deeper and getting a taste of Kibana's capabilities, head over to the Kibana Getting Started Page.

Using a Kibana Release

If you want to use a Kibana release in production, give it a test run, or just play around:

Building and Running Kibana, and/or Contributing Code

You might want to build Kibana locally to contribute some code, test out the latest features, or try out an open PR:

Documentation

Visit Elastic.co for the full Kibana documentation.

For information about building the documentation, see the README in elastic/docs.

Version Compatibility with Elasticsearch

Ideally, you should be running Elasticsearch and Kibana with matching version numbers. If your Elasticsearch has an older version number or a newer major number than Kibana, then Kibana will fail to run. If Elasticsearch has a newer minor or patch number than Kibana, then the Kibana Server will log a warning.

Note: The version numbers below are only examples, meant to illustrate the relationships between different types of version numbers.

Situation Example Kibana version Example ES version Outcome
Versions are the same. 5.1.2 5.1.2 💚 OK
ES patch number is newer. 5.1.2 5.1.5 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES minor number is newer. 5.1.2 5.5.0 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES major number is newer. 5.1.2 6.0.0 🚫 Fatal error
ES patch number is older. 5.1.2 5.1.0 ⚠️ Logged warning
ES minor number is older. 5.1.2 5.0.0 🚫 Fatal error
ES major number is older. 5.1.2 4.0.0 🚫 Fatal error

  • Alerting to return matching documents

    Alerting to return matching documents

Describe the feature: At the moment it is possible to return the number of matching documents but not the actual matching document(s) itself Describe a specific use case for the feature: Basically for log threshold alert, something similar to count returned by variable {{context.matchingDocuments}} but the idea would be to be able to iterate through the actual documents and return them

  • [Lens][Visualize] Align inspector header in Lens and Visualize

[Lens][Visualize] Align inspector header in Lens and Visualize

    Summary

    Fixes #112060

This PR aligns the Inspector panel title when shown within both Lens and Visualize editors.

Now the header is showing the visualization title when available and the Inspector placeholder when there's no title yet. Note that when testing in Dashboard the title of the panel is different from the title of the visualization.

Mind #112442 when testing this fix, as it can still affect it.

  • [Dashboard][Lens] Empty title is not preserved when returning to dashboard from editor

[Dashboard][Lens] Empty title is not preserved when returning to dashboard from editor

    Describe the bug:

If the user sets the Lens panel title to an empty string, navigating to the Lens editor and returning back to Dashboard makes the title rollback to its previous non-empty state. It can be reproduced both by cloning a Lens panel with a title and removing it, or importing a chart from library and editing the title: clicking on the Edit in Lens action and returning back to the dashboard in edit mode makes the previous title return.

When in view mode the title gets hidden, so it's not a major issue I think.

    Risk Matrix

Delete this section if it is not applicable to this PR.

Before closing this PR, invite QA, stakeholders, and other developers to identify risks that should be tested prior to the change/feature release.

When forming the risk matrix, consider some of the following examples and how they may potentially impact the change:

    | Risk | Probability | Severity | Mitigation/Notes | |---------------------------|-------------|----------|-------------------------| | Multiple Spaces—unexpected behavior in non-default Kibana Space. | Low | High | Integration tests will verify that all features are still supported in non-default Kibana Space and when user switches between spaces. | | Multiple nodes—Elasticsearch polling might have race conditions when multiple Kibana nodes are polling for the same tasks. | High | Low | Tasks are idempotent, so executing them multiple times will not result in logical error, but will degrade performance. To test for this case we add plenty of unit tests around this logic and document manual testing procedure. | | Code should gracefully handle cases when feature X or plugin Y are disabled. | Medium | High | Unit tests will verify that any feature flag or plugin combination still results in our service operational. | | See more potential risk examples |

Implement add-file command option for kibana-keystore

    Describe the feature:

The elastic-keystore command-line tool has support for adding files to the keystore through the add-file command. It would be very helpful to implement the same feature for kibana-keystore which at this time only supports the add command.

Describe a specific use case for the feature:

This feature would make elastic-keystore and kibana-keystore consistent in functionality and offer simplified secret management in containerized scenarios.
